What Is SysEx?
SysEx is a free MIDI librarian program for the (classic) Macintosh. SysEx can transmit and receive system exclusive (sysex) messages via MIDI and can save and load these messages to and from disk.

System Requirements
SysEx requires the following:
  • A Macintosh computer with a 68020, 68030, 68040, or PowerPC processor.
  • System 7.0 through Mac OS 9.x (see below for a similar OS X program).
  • Opcode Systems' OMS (version 1.2 or greater) or equivalent, including versions of Mark of the Unicorn's FreeMIDI that support OMS emulation (directly or via the OMS Emulator extension; see below).

SysEx News
March 14, 2003

SysEx 4.8.0 is released. The highlight of this release is that a long-standing problem with receiving into SysEx using Midiman (M-Audio) MIDISPORT USB interfaces now appears to be resolved. The issue may have affected other interfaces (such as the Steinberg USB2MIDI) as well. The manual has also been expanded to add additional troubleshooting information.

I am no longer able to provide support for SysEx. If you're having trouble with SysEx, please do the following:

  • Make sure you have the latest version (4.8.0).
  • Read the SysEx 4.8.0 Manual. The Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked Questions sections have been expanded.
  • If you're experiencing crashes, please check your interface manufacturer's web site for updated driver software.

By now many former SysEx users have probably moved to OS X and no longer use SysEx, and the time has come for me to move on as well. I've enjoyed hearing from SysEx users all over the world and am glad that I've been able to make a small contribution to support Mac musicians everywhere. Thank you for your support over the last five years.

SysEx user Dana Fiorucci pointed out that MOTU has created an OMS Emulator extension to allow FreeMIDI versions from 1.40 on to work with SysEx (and other OMS applications). OMS Emulator is available from Dana's Synth Site (click the Free stuff link near the bottom of the page). Also check Dana's OMS Emulator tips page.

SysEx doesn't work with OS X, but original SysEx beta tester Kurt Revis has filled the gap by creating the freeware SysEx Librarian for OS X.
